So, you’re here because you want to learn how to start a blog, huh? You want to create your own platform where you can write and publish your ideas, and maybe earn from it, too?

Great! You’re in the right place. Here, I will help you with how to get started, and I promise I will make things simple. I will veer away from jargon and technicalities. I will teach you how to set up a website from scratch with no coding required. Good news, huh?

Okay, let’s dive right into Blogging 101!

STEP 1 – Pick a domain name (and get that domain name for free)

Your domain name will be the primary brand of your blog. Simply put, it is your blog name. It is what you tell people when you want them to check out your cyberspace. It’s your address online.

In choosing a blog name, remember your interests and target audience. If you will be blogging about travels and adventures then pick a name with “trip”, “travel”, “wander”, “adventure”, whatever. If you will blog about food, then a name with “dishes”, “food”, “menu”, etc. seem apt, … and so on and so forth.

There are a lot of domain names to choose from.

Domain names are affordable, I got mine for only $13 a year, that’s less than ₱1,000. If you do not want to spend a dime, that’s fine, too. However, your web address will be butt-ugly. In looks cheap, your blog URL will look like this:

• yourblog.winx.com
• yourblog.wordpress.com
• yourblog.blogspot.com
• yourblog.tumblr.com

With a free domain, our website will appear as www.loveetwander.wordpress.com instead of www.loveeatwander.com. See the difference?

STEP 2 – Choose a blogging platform

A platform is where you will build your blog. It is the foundation of your site. There are several platforms to choose from such as Blogger, Tumbler, Winx, and WordPress.

I have tried all four, and by far, the best of them all is WordPress. No wonder it is considered one of the biggest blogging platforms in the world, with countless plugins and add-ons and almost infinite theme options. With WordPress, you can design and layout your blog a gazillion ways.

And oh, WordPress is totally FREE!

STEP 3 – Write!

After doing the basics, after choosing your blog theme, creating the header, and main pages (about, contact, work with me, etc), installing plugins it’s now time to come up with your contents!

If I may add, the advisable entries are at least 3 times a week for better search engine standing. It is actually a challenge it keeps up with it.
Step 4 – Promote your site!

Now that you have something on your site, it’s time to tell the world about it! Start promoting your blog and bring people to read what you wrote. Guest posting or posting articles to other websites and with a link directing to your blog is one way of promoting. Reposting on sites like Medium and LinkedIn, or including links when writing responses in forums, Facebook groups, or on Quora. Just make sure you’re adding value — and not spamming people with your URL.

Social media is another great way to get more traffic and grow your author following. Instead of merely tooting your own horn, be sure to interact with editors, writers, and bloggers, too. Share their content with your community, comment on their posts, and support them when and where you can. Hopefully, they’ll return the favor!

STEP 5 – Choose a web host and purchase a hosting package

This can be moved up to STEP 3 but since you’re just starting, and having a web host will require you to shell out a few funds, I will place this as step number 5. Besides, even though having a web host is very important, it can wait.

So, what is a web host? A web host is where everything will be saved. It is like a computer hard-drive on the internet where your blog will be saved. WordPress, as a platform, also acts as a host. However, when your sites get more traffic and content, having a separate host is recommended so there will be someone who will do all the technical magic to ensure your site appears on the WorldWideWeb when someone types your domain name into their browser. Actually, you can simply upgrade your WordPress hosting package, but it is better to get a separate one for better service.

For Love. Eat. Wander., we use Siteground as a host. It’s more expensive than others (we pay $180 per year) but I can attest to the reliability of their customer service. You can literally chat with anyone from the Siteground team 24/7.

STEP 6 – Monetize!

This, definitely, is the most exciting step as you will finally reap the benefits of all your hard work. As long as you keep posting helpful and engaging content, work on optimizing your articles for SEO and sharing it with your networks — and you will soon see your new blog start to blossom. Businesses will start contacting you for partnership, and you will also start earning from affiliates.

To better understand this topic, I made a video on how to monetize your blog. Check below:

Now the you already know the basics of how to start a blog, go ahead and start planning! In the end, how to start a blog is just the start, creating a successful blog is about hard work and consistency.
